Hatchet 3 (2013) review (Decker Shado review)

Hatchet 3 was the film that was a horror in the Hatchet trilogy. It is a story about Victor Crowley, his murderous rampage through Louisiana's Honey Island Swamp. Kane Hodder portrays Victor Crowley while Brian Quinn plays Deputy Winslow. Rileah Vanbilt plays Misty.

The practical effects in the film are the film's biggest strengths. Hatchet 3 is a horror movie that uses CG effects in a lesser degree than other films. Hatchet 3 has a number of makeup effects that are practical and sets, which results in some really horrific scenes in the movie.

Kane Hodder is a standout among the cast, and he's an intimidating villain. The dialogue is hilarious and tongue-in cheek that it could be like a classic 1980s horror movie. Additionally, there are some genuinely funny moments throughout that provide comedic contrast against all of the gut-wrenching action on screen.

Unfortunately, due to the limited budget (reportedly only $1 million) most locations used are re-used from previous films in the (blog post) series. The identical boat house was used twice in the film and a lot of the film feels like it's been recycled from previous films in the series. This can make it feel almost too familiar at times for those who have already seen Hatchet or Hatchet 2

Overall, I enjoyed Hatchet 3 even though it was very similar to previous entries in this series--it provided lots of bloody thrills as well as entertaining performances from its cast members.
